Beaulieu Named Hampshire’s Smartest Village

Beaulieu has topped the smart chart for Hampshire in The Daily Telegraph’s listing of rural locations in Britain with so-called ‘posh appeal’. Features that helped this delightful riverside village secure the top spot include its New Forest location, picturesque 16th century High Street, rural chic artisan shops, such as Beaulieu Chocolate Studio and Bellord & Brown ‘produce purveyors’, and its proximity to the sailing hub of Lymington.

Beaulieu has also been named as one of the country’s most expensive villages and is considered one of the prettiest, too. This is helped by the local landowners, the Montagus, who take care to ensure that the village remains unspoiled.

Rob Batten, co-founder and director, Spencers New Forest, comments: ‘Beaulieu hitting the top spot as Hampshire’s smartest village is not a surprise. We describe Beaulieu as being one of the ‘Three Bs’ in the Forest – a trio of villages that are consistently in high demand with house hunters – the other two being Brockenhurst and Burley.’

There are certainly some stunning properties tucked away around Beaulieu and Buckler’s Hard, the 18th century ship-building hamlet just down river, some with gardens running down to the Beaulieu River. This is one of the few privately owned rivers in the world, and considered by sailors to be one of the loveliest. The wealthy and the well-known can live here quietly, secluded from the outside world.
